Being MCA and the sunset of the Chinese cause

.

Without the MCA spirit, what its leaders say and do are despised by its own grassroot and the venerable Chinese newspapers.

In the minds of the grassroot, the real MCA man/woman wouldn’t speak of imagined clash of Islam taking over race. Or to imply that Malaysian Chinese ceases to be a Chinese if he/she cannot speak in Mandarin.

MCA leaders have been unthinkingly caught in a bind of its own making that, being MCA was an absolute requirement to fight for a Chinese cause. The trick worked fine, way back in time before negotiating for 1957’s project Merdeka.

But now it is 2011, with courtesy of compulsory basic primary and some secondary schooling, Malaysians have got some education and been taught some academic thinking skills (I hope you have acquired them skills, if not all, some?).

Shall we ask again does the call “MCA fights for Chinese rights” sounds right today, in the dawning of Bangsa Malaysia?

In light of today’s reality, many wondered if there might possibly be a new lifeline lease to MCA, whether if it has leaders of resolute to rejuvenate MCA from the outdated agenda, that being MCA is not an absolute requirement to fight for a Chinese cause.

It is telling that nothing is done by leaders of MCA so far to give it a new lease of life through an updated constitution.

This jives with the groundswell truth that MCA has always been first and foremost to protect their own businesses and the economic returns.

It is a sunset era for MCA leadership of Chua Soi Lek, Ng Yen Yen, Kong Cho Ha, Chor Chee Heung, Liow Tiong Lai… (Go here to fill up with names and worthiness of MCA Central Committee members)

Will you ask Najib Razak to quit as PM if MCA fail in GE13?

Am very impressed with concerns raised by commentators reacting to Chua Soi Lek’s call to Taib Mahmud to step down cos the old guy’s SUPP couldn’t deliver the Chinese votes.

So, Najib? Want to slap MCA leaders/ministers (Chua Soi Lek, Liow Tiong Lai, Ng Yen Yen, Chor Chee Heung, Kong Chor Ha) or not for their insolence towards 1Malaysia new politics? Make sure you keep this in mind when you do the shuffle for the cabinet, ok?

Read and be entertained:

“Did MCA did better or worse than SUPP in 2008? Do they know that by implication, they will ask Najib to quit UMNO if MCA is wiped out (and MCA WILL be wiped out) in the next GE? Why are you adopting Mahathir, Perkasa and Pembela culture? Sad betrayal of Chinese hopes and trust.”

“There is only bn and mca who went around telling a particular race that they will not have such race in the government if not elected. This is a scare tactic but does not work cos what we want is those to rep us must be of integrity, caring and those corrupt, racialist and now blame others for their doing.Pui to you mca, mahatir, utusan and perkasa.”

“Be careful! Taib will very soon be asking MCA to extinct yourselves for losing Chinese support.”

“.. the political climate has changed and MCA is losing direction as how to function in this new environment. Telling others to quit when they themselves should dissappear”

“Just sorak kosong. Taib will add on MCA joker list to persona-non-grata to the state immigration department under circus clown without state permit.”

“Call for Taib to quit is ungentlemanly. PBB won 100 % and if PBB had taken a beating, Sarawak would most probably be run by Pakatan.”

“Why must MCA always argue their case based on racial lines? Whilst it’s fitting that they can clamour for the ouster of Taib, we ought to put the record straight that it was not only the Chinese who do not support the CM but the other races as well. It was quite coincidental that the majority of the urbanites are Chinese and this was perceived as the actual scenario.”

And this remark by ‘Confused’ says it all for the confused public:

“I just do not know what the MCA is up to making all sorts of statements. I do not support Taib and think he should resign BUT the fact is Sarawak BN won 55 out of 71 seats(77% of the seats) and PBB won all 35 seats it contested. If Taib should quit because he has lost the support of the Chinese community, should not Najib quit too because he has also lost the support of the Chinese community too and has a lower percentage of seats?”

Young Chinese Malaysians and MCA members and their destiny in history

Me received a very serious sounding email from a young MCA member friend. Share with you…

Looking into MCA history of 60 years, I’m afraid this is the only time an attempt at reform is seriously underway. And this is happening in our lifetime…

Seems like young Chinese Malaysians and MCA members have a chance to stamp our mark in history.

Sigh…like it or not, we’re part of it. We can’t run away, and I see a vision of my descendent pondering on my life philosophy years later when I’m old and grey.

I wonder how would they react to my stand on

• Backbone bending, kow towing to big bro UMNO?
• Warlordism in the little world of MCA?

Heavens forbid they carry the shame at my lack of courage to be a part of change.

My personal wish is to see MCA discard its central delegate warlords, ‘triads’ and their leftovers, through a reform.

I guess I don’t have to like Ong Tee Keat. I don’t have to like Chua Soi Lek. I don’t have to like the likes of Liow Tiong Lai, the tearful Wee Ka Siong or Chew Mei Fun either.

I don’t relish wearing face mask or wear black + light candles (my parents hate it and frown upon it as they deem it very sueey reserved for sanctity of human funeral). Won’t get anything done, wasting time.

Should I or shouldn’t I talk to all of these MCA leaders directly? What, How, Got to think how to go about it?

Me pity this young Hamlet, he should just go ahead and question his leaders directly. Go get them and dialogue, query and query those people to heart’s content… Be the change you want to be, man!

In fact, MCA members and the chinese community who want reform should seriously look into the MCA that members want and check out the real agenda of all their leaders(and their backroom handlers) involved.

Members should go and give the players a strong message what they want these appointed ’leaders’ to do for MCA. Speak up now or remain silent forever.

P/S: Blur? Read here and here for some titillating context of MCA’s interesting makeup. Remember to use your thinking equipment wisely.

Friendly advice to Najib: Know your Spring and Autumn 春秋時代 before meeting MCA

The ‘beloved‘ Barisan Nasional chairman needs a quick education on Chinese history and most importantly, the Chinese mindset before his meeting with MCA leaders.

(fyi: ‘beloved’ is a favourite loving endearment and liberally spewed by Liow Tiong Lai whenever he has the chance to demonstrate revere to the UMNO big brother)

And so, let us help the PM Najib Razak who said he will meet leaders of warring group in the MCA to solve current crisis, preferably before the proposed EGM on November 28 cried by the Liow Tiong Lai/ Wee Ka Siong/ Chew Mei Fun faction against MCA President Ong Tee Keat and Deputy President Dr. Chua Soi Lek who have the legitimate power of incumbency.

Below is a quickie education for ‘beloved’ Najib so that he can fulfil the KPI of an excellent mediator. For us normal everyday people who don’t know much about leadership and warring, a little bit of history may be an interesting addition to our kopitiam gossip:

.

The Spring and Autumn period is named after a book called the Spring and Autumn Annals, a chronicle of the state of Lu between 722 BC and 481 BC, which tradition associates with Confucius . It was a period of turbulence and changes in the economy, politics, and military affairs. In Chinese history, it was a period which roughly corresponds to the first half of the Eastern Zhou dynasty (from the second half of the 8th century BC to the first half of the 5th century BC).

During the Spring and Autumn period, China was ruled by a feudal system. The Zhou dynasty kings held nominal power, but only directly ruled over a small Royal Domain, revolving around their capital (currently Luoyang). The status of the Emperor was diminished to little more than that of a figurehead, while powerful nobles gradually extended their dominions over smaller neighboring states. According to recorded history, during the Spring and Autumn Period, there were over 480 wars, 52 vassal states were vanquished, and 36 kings were killed.

By the sixth century B.C., most small states had disappeared, and a few large and powerful principalities dominated China. Some southern states, such as Chu, and Wu, claimed independence from the Zhou. Wars were undertaken to oppose some of these states-Wu and Yue. In the state of Jin, six powerful families fought for supremacy, and a series of civil wars resulted in the splitting of Jin into three smaller states by the beginning of the fifth century B.C. At that time, the control Zhou kings exerted over feudal princes was greatly reduced, the feudal system crumbled, and the Warring States Period began.

During the Spring and Autumn Period, a complex system of interstate relations developed and many projects requiring the collaboration of two or more states were undertaken, such as drainage operations, canals, dikes, reservoirs, and roads. Massive walls were built, both as protection from each other and from aboriginal and nomadic tribes.

The Spring and Autumn Period was also considered as a period of philosophies: Daoism, Confucianism, and Legalism originated during that period. Many important cultural developments took place, and great Chinese thinkers including Confucius, founder of Confucianism; Laozi, founder of Daoism; and Mozi, founder of Mohism developed the philosophical systems which have shaped North Eastern Asia until the present day.

Invite Najib to manage MCA? No need, coup drama ends soon

Hishammuddin Hussein must have enjoyed playing the devil’s advocate when he mischievously suggested tis high time the MCA leadership seek Barisan Nasional’s chairman Najib Razak’s help to intervene in MCA’s internal affairs.

Looks like MCA’s 2nd echelon leaders are now given the final warning through the mouth of their favorite UMNO brother.

Liow Tiong Lai (another specimen of a flip flopper), Wee Ka Siong and Chew Mei Fun better pay heed to UMNO’s signal and not misread it as UMNO’s support for their coup attempt.

Meanwhile,

1. 1Malaysians continues to enjoy reading and gossiping about MCA’s infernal affairs over their morning kopi, roti bakar and half boiled egg

2. The aunties get to learn a thing or two on how not to convene an EGM to resolve internal home problems

3. Political newbies get a chance of a lifetime to observe first hand the do’s and don’ts of Chinese politics, especially the part on how to avoid being a hapless political pawn.

As for me, I’ll be eagerly awaiting for MCA coup drama to fizzle out, hopefully the MCA kids to please be on their best behaviour themselves when Comrade Hu Jintao arrives on November 10 in Malaysia to talk economy.

And, I’m already excited anticipating 2012‘s premier next week.

The analysis on MCA that Malaysiakini didn’t have

Such an interesting article I found published here. Much more titillating than Malaysiakini’s analysis because it has the potential to go into Part II, III, etc – if this MCA insider zooms the microscope to tell us about the problem ‘makers’.

Tell us who caused MCA to tumble big time, Mary! Are they the Division people? Are they the Division/State chairmen or committees? What are these people’s modus operandi? Pretty please?

This is what Mary wrote (reproduced below). I suspect its the Part I of more to come:

It’s no secret that MCA’s young and bright members are being courted by Pakatan Rakyat (PR). PR needs talents to help its political future.

For purpose of this discussion, I shall use the term ‘Faiths’ to describe the young and bright members of MCA and use the term ‘Comfortables’ for those already installed comfortably in the MCA central, state or division committees. Most, if not all of the Comfortables have been there for some terms already, some since 1970s.

Faiths are those neglected 3rd liners, members who have the fire in their belly. They think as Malaysians, not ‘Chinese’ Malaysians. They are exposed to global ideas and understand the demands of shifting political, economics and social environment worldwide. These young men and women, below the age of 40, have been exposed to progressive systems and ethics through their working experiences with MNCs or GLCs. They speak Malay and English fluently, perhaps some Mandarin. They are aware of the conversations that is going on in the cyberspace and probably operates a blog or more. They have faith in the party’s constitution but lack faith in the unresponsive political style of party old guards. But most of all, Faiths hunger for a system of leadership progression.

Faiths watch how elected representatives perform and cringe in despair over the Comfortables lack in lawmaking.

Comfortables prefer to focus on NGO activities – providing ‘service’ to help people fill out forms, apply permits/approvals, attending to family disputes, pointing their fingers at clogged drains, dirty river, etc. Comfortables were not known to initiate amendment or change to archaic laws or by-laws. Most unfortunately, Comfortables were not heard voicing out ideas or even to engage the rakyat’s input meaningfully in efforts to resolve policies. There was no move or initiatives by the Comfortables to systematically or substantively groom new and current members as party’s future leaders.

Young members know the ‘fact’ that these towkays have not shaken off ‘top-down’ propagandist methodologies to shove, oops, promote their viewpoints. Towkay Comfortables operate with outdated one-way communication in this age of engagement. It is very difficult, nay, nearly impossible to get Comfortables to engage in debates without relegating it into a propaganda session. Ask thinking members, how very difficult it is to try to get them to address policy issues. Most of the time, inquisitive members were treated to the usual ‘tai chi’ avoidance maneuvers.

Sad fact, but it is perceived as true by most members and the public that Comfortables lack ideas and strategy to deal with the changed political landscape. Some may dispute this by saying that the Comfortables have organized many, many activities. Sure. But how these activities contribute to the
political survival of the Party is lost on me. Look at the often used one off publicity gimmicks such as giving away gifts to the poor, organizing dinners or exhibitions. All promoted in the name of service. Most people suspect that free publicity was the ultimate objective for some organizers.

The important question of how do such techniques result in a long term return for the Party were never addressed. I haven’t heard the Comfortables fighting for a leadership bureau to train all members up as future Obama. For me, if a political party has no plan to make leaders out of its members, it has no dream. It has no place in the political arena.

Back to the problem of the Faiths. Although disadvantaged as ‘servicemen’, Faiths know they have a distinct advantage over the installed Comfortables. Faiths are articulate, curious for discourse and solutions to progressive politics, policies and brave enough to participate in addressing hard issues such as Article 121(A). Faiths are not afraid to engage in discussion on national politics with opposition parties. And Faiths keep on banging their heads against the great wall system designed by the Comfortables to keep them out.

One clear message from the 2008 General Election is that Malaysians want progressive lawmakers. Election candidates with strong service background were rejected in the political tsunami along with ‘ineffective’ MPs who were unable/failed to speak up on issues or demonstrated inability to articulate policies.

I say again, MCA is in the business of politics. Therefore it cannot run away from meeting the higher demands and standards of the electorate. The electorate market has indicated a future demand for lawmakers.

Good news is, supply is not short within the party membership. MCA just need to legitimize an internal system to churn up the Faiths, separate the servicemen from lawmakers.

The era of the Comfortables as lawmakers has ended. MCA can still use them by re-designating them to concentrate their specialty as Local Councillors. But for immediate action, just unleash talents of the Faiths to take on the role of lawmakers.

Party members! This party election, make a conscientious decision in casting your vote. Allegiance to Comfortables is less important than saving the party. It is indeed a troublesome choice, but unleashing Faith is the best bet to steer MCA through the uncharted political seas ahead. The leadership better take heed.

No holds barred dissection of Malaysia Chinese Association (MCA)!

Fu Yoh!

If Ong Ka Ting can lead his band of lethargic Central Committee members to do this type of no holds barred evaluation of MCA’s health and lifespan beyond the next GE… Maybe, maybe MCA can be like the re-born phoenix and rise again.

My MCA senior friend told me nobody knows the results of the party post mortem (I hate this term- usually used on dead bodies!!). Most probably the report would not be an earth shattering, totally honest revelation, he thought. When I asked why he arrive at such conclusion, he said as the Central Committee members towkays are not in tune with grassroots and the middle class thinking (king makers of GE12) and what’s going on in internet conversations, their post mortem will be most unlikely to reflect the true state of MCA.

Oh yeah, to listen to the no holds barred critic of MCA, just click to open the podcast HERE.

You won’t find this podcast in malaysiakini.com or malaysia-today.net.

.

Tell me what you think of the critic, or whether you have other ideas, ok? Must transmit to my senior MCA friend’s ears.

.

P/S: MCA snoop squad, (if you exist) you better listen to this and tell it like it is to your bosses, ok?

Nazri Aziz blames top component partners for BN failure

A friend alerted me that Sinchew today reported that the uncouth Nazri Aziz blamed MIC and MCA for failure to help BN win in GE12. This winner of Padang Rengas MP seat who scraped by with a majority of 1,749 is a real swinger.

On a good day, he offers gems like, “We (UMNO) have to really sit down and think” and on a moody day, he whacks MIC and MCA.

Its high time our new and energetic Health Minister get the warders from Tanjung Rambutan to give dear Nazri a much needed psycho session. If need be, give him basic icepick lobotomy. It’s a wonderfully good way to release bad gas trapped in his thick skull and offers Nazri an instant mood swing reliever.

Luckily, MITI Minister Muhyiddin Yassin (I like him better than Rafidah Abdul Aziz). I think he a more classy political breed and has behaviour way palatable than Nazri’s. On the topic in Sinchew, Muhyiddin ventured to suggest helping component parties to take on roles to improve BN messaging.

OK, I caya you, Muhyiddin (at the moment).
